Biography

Training

Dr. Antoine Chehade received his undergraduate training at McGill University, graduating with Bachelor of Science in Physiology in 1986. He completed the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1990 at McGill. Following a dental residency at the Royal Victoria Hospital, he pursued four years of graduate training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, obtaining a Master of Science in 1995. He is a Fellow and Examiner of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dental Surgeon-in-Chief

As part of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) hospital merger, Dr. Chehade was appointed the single administrative head overseeing dentistry at the Montreal General Hospital (MGH), Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH) and Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) sites. In 1998, Dr. Chehade took over from Dr. Eric Millar as Dental Surgeon-in-Chief of the RVH and in 2000 he succeeded Dr. Ken Bentley as Chief of Dentistry at the (MGH).

In his current position as Chief of Dentistry for the MUHC, Dr. Chehade is indebted to Drs. Bentley and Millar who have established the organizational and educational structure that has provided generations of dental and OMFS residents with invaluable learning opportunities. Their vision and talents as department leaders and educators has provided the department of dentistry and oral surgery with a solid foundation within the current MUHC clinical structure.

Dr. Chehade is fortunate to enjoy the collaboration of Dr. Stephane Schwartz who is the current director of the Montreal Children’s Hospital Department of Dentistry. Dr. Schwartz is the administrative leader of a large multidisciplinary team serving the dental needs of children in the Montreal community. Dr. Chehade also enjoys the collaboration of Dr. Timothy Head, Academic Director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) graduate program, (Faculty of Dentistry, McGill University) and Dr. Hilal Sirhan, Associate Director of the Medical Dental Residency (MDR) programs at the adult dentistry sites.

The MDR and OMFS teaching programs within in the MUHC are indebted to the very dedicated part-time teaching staff who generously offer their time to participate in patient care and resident education in the MUHC.

Dr. Chehade is committed to creating centres of excellence for the delivery of the optimal dental care, teaching and research. He serves on the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Dentistry, and Executive of the Council of Physicians, Dentists and Pharmacists of the Montreal General Hospital. Dr. Chehade is chairman of the planning committee for the integration of the department of dentistry into the new MUHC, a comprehensive academic health care centre to be constructed in the near future.

 

Associate Professor

As an Associate Professor, he is actively involved in teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels in the division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at McGill University. Dr. Chehade lectures on the topics of dental implants, medically compromised patient care, jaw (orthognathic) surgery and sedation techniques. He is the clinical and administrative director of the MUHC dental residency network, one of the largest programs of its kind in Canada. He is also clinical director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery graduate training program in the Faculty of Dentistry of McGill University. Dr. Chehade is coordinator of the Conscious Sedation and Advanced Cardiac Life Support Course for the McGill dental residency programs.

 

Research

Dr. Chehade’s research interests are in the field of implantology in which he has published a number of articles. He is a co-investigator and clinical coordinator of a large comparative study supported by a joint government (Canadian Institute of Health Research) – industry grant, evaluating the nutritional outcomes of endentulous patients receiving implants versus conventional treatment.

 

Professional involvements

Dr. Chehade’s many professional involvements include the Canadian (CAOMS) and Quebec Associations of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He has been a speaker for the CAOMS National Conference. Dr. Chehade has been a guest speaker for the Association for the Study of Rigid Internal Fixation (AO-ASIF). He is a fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the International Team for Oral Implantology, a world-wide network of professionals dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of knowledge on implant dentistry. He is an active member of the Academy of Osseointegration, which fosters education and advancement in this field.

Dr. Chehade has also served as an auditor of hospital dental departments and residency programs for the Commission of Dental Accreditation, an independent arm of the Canadian Dental Association. He was a member of the Advisory Committee of the Order of Dentists of Quebec for the development of regulations and guidelines for sedation techniques. He is Past President of the Montreal Dental Club.

 

Private practice

As a certified specialist in oral surgery Dr. Chehade has had an active private practice since 1995, providing a full range of surgical services to patients in the Montreal community. His special interests are in dental implant treatment, jaw (orthognathic) surgery, extraction of wisdom teeth, and treatment of facial trauma.
